Murphy – Olive’s Porch – “A new folk school experience” – will open in April at 27 Peachtree St. in downtown Murphy.

Olive’s Porch is a “sister” to John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown. Plans are for it to be a new community gathering place that will offer a large classroom along with a retail shop showcasing  works from Appalachian artists. There will also be a studio maker space for an Artist in Residence program.

Olive’s Porch was named after Olive Dame Campbell, co-founder of the folk school.

Hands on workshops will be offered for adults as well as youth and classes will focus on traditional Appalachian craft, music and dance. Events will be presented on evenings and weekends year-round.

In advance of the opening of Olive’s Porch, there will be two live and free film screenings at the L&N Depot at 4 Railroad St., just off Hiwassee Street. After each screening, there will be a question-and-answer session with the filmmakers. There will also be live music by the Liden siblings and a raffle drawing for a 100-piece or 60-piece H5 Creations domino set after the film Lily Topples the World.

The first screening will be for Los Hermanos/The Brothers from 1-4 p.m. Saturday. This film is about two Afro-Cuban-born brothers, violinist Ilmar and pianist Aldo, who live on opposite sides of a geopolitical chasm. The film tracks their parallel lives in New York and Havana, their reunion and their first performances together.

The second screening will be for Lily Topples the World from 1-3:15 p.m. Saturday, April 2. This film follows 20-year-old Lily Hevesh, the world’s most acclaimed domino toppler and the only girl in her field. She’s followed while rising as an artist and role model.

The film took more than three years across many cities to complete. It features appearances by Jimmy Fallon, Katy Perry and Will Smith as well as YouTuber Casey Neistat and a stream of Gen-Z creators. This is a story of how passion and artistry come together to make dreams possible.

Masks are required, and social distancing will be observed. For details on Olive’s Porch or either film, email caitlinadair@folkschool.org.
