TOPTON – Firefighters have a 65-acre woods fire mostly contained just south of U.S. 19 near Topton.

The fire broke out Thursday evening along the roadside and burned about a quarter to a third of a mile of highway frontage while sweeping up steep slopes into the woods.

The fire is located off U.S. 19/74 just east of Topton, between the U.S. 129/Tallulah Road intersection and Franklin Road south of the highway. It is in Macon County just over the Cherokee County line.

Firefighters monitored the blaze overnight to ensure it minded its manners and didn't threaten any structures.

An N.C. Forest Service report said the fire was 85% contained as of 12:16 p.m. today (Friday, April 18).
