The 2025 National Day of Prayer will be observed in Cherokee County on the first Thursday in May. This year’s theme is “Pour Out to the God of Hope and Be Filled,” which is inspired by Romans 15:13. The observance will take place at noon on Thursday at the steps of the Cherokee County Courthouse in downtown Murphy for a time of corporate prayer for our nation, led by pastor Chris West of Shepherd of the Mountains Church. Everyone is invited.

Faith & Community Alliance NC, formerly Citizens for a Better America, will meet from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday in Room 316 at First Baptist Church of Murphy, 517 Hiwassee St. Go around to the back of the church and enter the Portico. Patricia Arenas will be the guest speaker. She is from New Mexico, retired from the military and a missionary to the nations. Everyone is invited to attend and bring a friend. “Carry the Flag,” the 2.2-mile suicide awareness campaign, will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, rain or shine, at the Clay County Recreation Center in Hayesville. The walk begins at 9 a.m. Everyone is invited. Details: Call the Veterans Crisis Line at 800-273-8255, Ext. 1.

Woodturners are invited to attend the next meeting of the Brasstown Woodturners Guild at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The guild meets monthly at the Brasstown Community Center, 255 Settawig Road in Brasstown, usually on the first Saturday of the month. Hinton Center will host a disaster response workshop, “What to Know Before You Go” from noon-4:30 p.m. Wednesday May 7, at the center, 2330 Hinton Center Road in Hayesville. The event, which is $20 per person with lunch included, is designed for church groups, mission teams, and individuals interested in learning how to effectively respond to disasters. Culberson Volunteer Fire Department will hold a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at the fire department on N.C. 60 .

Grocery bingo starts at 7 p.m. Friday, May 16, at the Peachtree Community Center, 125 Memory Lane. All ages can play and are welcome. Play two cards for $5. There will be door prizes and a drawing. Bring a snack to share during the break. Details: Call 828-837-2980.

The Cherokee Clay Food Alliance and Still Waters Landing Farm invite everyone to The Big Table, a fundraiser that supports both organizations’ missions to provide farm-fresh food to the local community, from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Brasstown Community and Civic Center. The “Focus on Women’s Health – Supporting the Heart of Western North Carolina,” a free event, will be held Saturday, May 17, at Andrews United Methodist Church, 100 Chestnut St. The day will include the vendor hall from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.; lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; an educational program from 1-4 p.m. Door prizes will be given. Sessions will include spotlights on endocrinology, cardiology, mental health, bone and joint health, screenings and examinations, and nutrition and exercise. Physicians and other medical professionals are courtesy of Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital in Peachtree. The event is sponsored by Tri-County Democratic Women.
