Crash leads to arrest

Peachtree – Telecommunicators with the Cherokee County E-911 Communication Center received a call at 10:47 a.m. March 27 in reference to a motor vehicle crash that occurred on Greenlawn Cemetery Road, near the Hendrix Road intersection.

Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies responded. According to a release, the crashed vehicle was stolen from 570 Greenlawn Cemetery Road by suspect Kayla Newton.

Mark May was thrown from the bed of the vehicle on or about the driveway of 570 Greenlawn Cemetery Road during an attempt to stop the theft. Trayvon Busch, who also tried to stop the theft, was thrown from the vehicle during the crash thereafter.

Newton and Bush were taken to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tenn. The release says Newton was charged with:

  • Misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon.
  • Felony larceny of a motor vehicle.
  • Felony assault serious bodily injury.

Newton was taken into custody without incident on April 2 for the outstanding offenses and released after receiving a $25,000.00 unsecured bond from a magistrate. She is scheduled to appear in Cherokee County District Court on Thursday, April 18.
