Club president seeks help from community

Body

Martins Creek – The community center on Martins Creek Road, southwest of Murphy, has long been regarded as a place to go for events like parties, community dinners and weddings, as well as a host of other activities and meetings.

Tipper Pressley of Brasstown remembers the community center fondly, as she would go there as a child in the 1970s.

“I grew up going to the center,” she said. “It’s just been a part of my life.”

When COVID-19 hit, the center closed. However, while it’s open again, volunteers are having difficulty finding enough people to help keep it going. More help is urgently needed; otherwise, the long-standing center may be forced to close.

The community center is seeking help, which means this may be a good opportunity for anyone who enjoys volunteering and has a little extra time. Organizers are looking for folks who can help open and close the center, as well as be there for gospel singings and other events.

Steve Wilson has been going to the center since he was a child. The club’s president for the last two years is reaching out to the community for help.

“It would be for the betterment of the community to keep it open,” he said. “We want to save the future of our community fellowship.”

The Martins Creek Community Center has been around since 1972. The electric bill for the center is paid for with money raised by having monthly hamburger and hotdog cookouts.

The next cookout is set for 5 p.m. Saturday, July 16, and the music starts at 6 p.m.
