Murphy – Cindy Chastain was sworn in to fill a vacancy on the Murphy Town Council at the Oct. 2 meeting.

The Murphy Town Council consists of five council members and a mayor, but the mayor votes only in the case of a tie. The vacancy arose when council member Barbara Hughes announced her resignation in June.

Municipalities fill such vacancies by an appointment made by sitting council members, serving until the end of the vacated term. Town council members chose Chastain on Sept. 5 in an unanimous vote.

Chastain, a lifelong resident of Cherokee County and member of the Murphy community for the last 24 years, brings a wealth of experience along with an unwavering commitment to the betterment of the town, according to a release. She has worked some 30 years with N.C. Cooperative Extension.

Chastain said her motivation to serve on the town council stems from her deep-rooted connection to the community and a sincere desire to advocate for the needs and concerns of residents. She envisions a Murphy that fosters unity, promotes community events and ensures that the voices of all residents are heard.

Chastain said her vision for Murphy includes maintaining a pedestrian-friendly downtown, striking a balance between vehicular mobility and pedestrian accessibility. She is seen as an asset for the town with her experience working with neighboring communities, government agencies and nonprofit organizations.

Mayor Tim Radford expressed confidence in the council’s selection.

“Cindy is a highly respected member of our community, and I have no doubt that she will make a valuable and dedicated addition to the Murphy Town Council,” Radford said.

“Her passion for our town and her deep roots here make her an ideal candidate to serve our community. I look forward to Cindy’s contributions to our town and to the positive impact she will undoubtedly have on the continued growth and prosperity of Murphy.”
