Andrews – Saturday, July 2, promises to be a remarkable day in the Andrews Valley.
The town is hosting the Andrews Hometown Celebration with an ambitious lineup for a full day of fun. The events start at 11 a.m. Saturday in two locations. Opening ceremonies will be held at Andrews Recreation Park, where Mayor James Reid will offer comments and a prayer.
The Andrews Town Pool on Park Street will splash into action with contests and general tomfoolery. Throughout the day, organizers will conduct contests, including the worst belly flop and most patriotic swimsuit.
Over at the park, the community can participate in a number of anticipated activities, such as a home run derby, sack race and even a three-point shootout basketball contest. At noon, participants should watch for peanuts being dropped from an airplane that can be exchanged for prizes.
The park will offer a variety of food vendors. Eagle Fork Kids, for example, will serve up red, white and blue non-alcoholic exotic drinks.
Brian Wilson, activities director for the Andrews Recreation Department, hopes to see 1,500 people.
“We are expecting a good turnout,” he said. “We are looking forward to being in the park. It sat idle until March, when James Ellis and I were hired.”
Ellis is Andrews’ parks and recreation director.
Of this year’s event, Reid said, “I feel like this is gonna be the best year for independent celebration that we’ve had in about 20 years. There’s so much excitement going on in that park that will be fun for all.
“Please come out and enjoy the festivities Saturday, July 2. We want to urge all citizens to come enjoy free swim in our pool and participate in many activities.”
The mayor added that all Murphy and Cherokee County citizens are invited.
