Andrews – The Andrews Board of Aldermen approved an abandoned structure ordinance and minimum housing standards on July 10.
Also approved was a floodplain ordinance, which is mandatory in North Carolina with no need for public hearing or comment. Mayor Pro-tempore James McLean lead the meeting in Mayor James Reid’s absence.
Discussion of the abandoned structure ordinance from town attorney Holly Christy included the process that would precede the town’s taking action against property owners whose lots or structures are in various states of disrepair or clear abandonment and neglect. She said that process would including contacting owners through a series of letters, which could eventually lead to property liens in the event the owners did not comply.
Tabled for the Aug. 14 meeting was a recreational vehicle park ordinance. This will allow for a public hearing and comment portion.
The board heard from Joel Storrow of McGill Associates about the recommendation of a bid for both the extension of a water line for Snowbird Outfitters.
Storrow also discussed the impending replacement of 18 fire hydrants inside the town limits, along with a sewer and water treatment plant upgrade of the Leatherwood Water Storage Tank.
Both projects were 100% guaranteed funded from grants awarded two years ago as a part of the American Rescue Plan Act.
Justin Graham of T5 Data Centers discussed the upcoming soccer field project at Heritage Park.
Also discussed was the town’s support of the Cherokee County Fair in September. Cherokee County Fair board member Chasity Ledford asked for the town’s support in the form of $5,000, which was approved in open session, However, after a closed session, the board came back and voted to only approve $2,500 for the fair.
The Andrews Board of Aldermen meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Facilities Building, 85 Fourth St. downtown.
