Murphy – A Cherokee County juvenile is scheduled to appear in court this week in connection with an Oct. 29 drive-by shooting on Valley River Avenue.
The residence was occupied at the time, but no one was injured.
The incident marks the second time this year in which the brick exterior of a building may have prevented injury or loss of life during a drive-by shooting in Murphy. In April, an Atlanta man was charged with four counts of attempted murder after police said he fired an AK-47 into an apartment on Cool Springs Street.
“There were a couple of bullets that went through a window in this (shooting) as well as on that last one, and there were a couple that hit a vehicle outside on this one as well,” Murphy police Investigator Jason Murphy said. “The rest hit the outside brick of the home.”
Murphy police officers responded to a report of shots being fired into a residence from a motor vehicle at about 2:40 a.m. Responding officers were advised that a vehicle drove by the residence firing multiple shots from a firearm into the residence as well as a motor vehicle.
Murphy said the type of gun used in the shooting is unknown.
“We haven’t actually been able to recover it yet, so that’s still (part of the investigation),” he said.
The investigation led authorities to a suspect who falls under juvenile laws and guidelines, and a juvenile petition was issued by the N.C. Department of Juvenile Justice on Friday. A juvenile petition is the equivalent of an arrest for a minor.
The case is still under investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Murphy police Sgt. Ryan Cunningham at 828-837-2214.
