Murphy Kamdyn Koop loves the water – so much so that he earned certification to play in it his way. Koop has participated in classes with Murphy Scuba for about three years and is a certified scuba diver who loves exploring the ocean.
Murphy Scuba, previously known as Scuba Gym, assists folks with special needs in the water. They have been around for about eight years and utilize the pool at Murphy Health & Fitness, according to Shannon Vetter, an instructor at the facility.
Vetter said of Koop’s energy, “He’s very enthusiastic. In fact, we have to slow him down sometimes. Kamdyn really enjoys other scuba divers to play with under the water. He really likes a full pool.”
Koop’s bucket list includes being able to travel and see the coral reefs. The destination that has taken him the furthest to date has been California. He hopes his next scuba trip will be in Cancun, Mexico.
Born in 2006 in Provo, Utah, the Murphy High School student plans on graduating in 2025, with the hopes of being employed as a re-stocker at the country’s largest gas station, Buc-ee’s, in Kodak, Tenn.
Koop previously worked at Industrial Opportunities in Andrews, where he made U.S. Military patches known as “tacos,” as well as working at the Valley River Humane Society.
He enjoys car washes, making gaming tutorial videos and doing weather reports then posting them on his YouTube channel. He also enjoys phone repair as well as mountain biking and running.
His mother, Annie Koop, said of her son’s love of the water, “Since he was 3 years old, he’s been very sensory seeking. He’s always loved the water. When he was 6 months old, he used to put his head underneath the faucet and let it run. Scuba diving’s a good fit for him.”
