Blairsville, Ga. – Ham radio operators were busy reaching out to other operators around the world Jan. 27-28 during the organization’s Winter Field Day event.
The two-day event was held at the Fox Lake Club House, where ham operators gathered to set up equipment and operate as if there were a true emergency. The training exercise is done twice yearly. The summer and winter events invite not only experienced operators but people who are just interested in how ham radios work.
The Murphy Chapter of the Western Carolina Amateur Radio Club, set antennas up from the ground into the trees to gain a signal, then began making contacts around the world. Contacts are brief, with the purpose of simply seeing how far they can reach out to someone else participating in the field day event. The operators even compete to see who can make the most contacts.
Operators use FCC-assigned call signs rather than their names and must be licensed to use the equipment. Others may use the radio to make a contact if they are supervised by a licensed user. There are fines and penalties associated with misuse or operating without a license.
The testing of their equipment and range of reach ensures that during a disaster, other options are available, as cell phones and other traditional communication devices may no longer work. Ham radios can operate using generators or batteries, not requiring electricity.
Testing is done monthly, and there are three different tiers – Technician, General and Extra – each offering different privileges and range of reach. There are also fees associated with licensure and purchase of equipment.
In the past, ham radio operators were primarily men. However, the hobby has also gained the interest of plenty of women.
Some of the areas reached by local operators include Union Island, which is 10,000 miles away, as well as Australia, Japan and Russia. Friendships have been made around the world using ham radios.
