Murphy – Ten years ago, Steven Aft found his passion.
He owned his business, Steven Aft State Farm Insurance, for two years by then and was seeking ways to engage in the community. He landed on a scholarship for students who overcame sometimes crippling challenges to succeed.
“It became my passion is to serve those who desire to be the best version of themselves,” Aft said. “Through the Extra Mile Award Scholarship program, I have been fortunate to meet some amazing individuals who have chosen a life path toward success, prosperity and purpose, despite personal hardship.”
Each year, Aft awards Extra Mile scholarships to “students go the extra mile to substantially improve or consistently maintain their high level of academic and extracurricular performance.” He is honored to present these local students with a one time $500 scholarship.
“Their resiliency is nothing short of awe inspiring,” Aft said. “Being there to support them in reaching their future endeavors is one of my life purposes fulfills me.”
At the ceremony May 9, five scholars received the scholarship:
- Andrews High School senior Dyanna Holloway, who will use her scholarship at Bob Jones University;
- Murphy High School senior Tyler Laney and Hayesville High School senior Mary Nicholson will both will attend Western Carolina University;
- Hiwassee Dam High School senior Georgia Francis, who will attend Tri-County Community College;
- Robbinsville High School senior Elizabeth Boyle, who will enter the Savannah College of Art & Design.
Aft is proud of all five 2023 Extra Mile recipients.
“I am so excited for this year’s scholarship winners. They are a very deserving bunch,” he said. “Like their predecessors, they will continue to Extra Mile tradition in becoming a true testament to what is possible when you choose to overcome life’s challenges and persevere through adversity.”
