Andrews – Spring has sprung at the Andrews Public Library.
Come out to see the newest offerings of the Seed Catalog and the Free Little Library, along with the library’s annual Book Sale Fundraiser beginning next week and its quarterly art show. The staff is also awaiting remodeling of the public meeting space.
Branch co-manager Kelly Bryant said the Seed Catalog was realized through a partnership with N.C. Cooperative Extension and Modern Woodmen of America, with additional support from Andrews Friends of the Library.
“We’re offering a limit of seven seed packets per person right now for planting season,” she said.
“We’ve also procured extra funding with the help of Marlena Baker of N.C. Cooperative Extension with $700 for more seed packets along with $300 for gardening books to help the public learn more about growing their own vegetables, flowers and herbs this year. We’re excited to offer these seeds at no cost to our patrons.”
In addition, Friends of the Andrews Library is holding its annual Book Sale, which has taken over the meeting room and will run through regular operating hours through Friday. The quarterly art show will be held Tuesday, as a Young Adult & Children’s display with art from local ages 21 and under artists Bailey Shope, Jacob Teasdale and Greta Whisenant.
Curated by Bryant, she said, “It’s time young local artists were featured in the show, because we have seen some real promise and talent with all of the creative activities we provide opportunities for at the library through our programs.”
The library’s public meeting space will also be getting a remodel with assistance from the Valleytown Visionary Guild, which chose the library’s space as a civic project for an update from its late 1970s utilitarian environment to bring the space into the 21st century with more palatable décor and ambiance. This remodeling is set to begin in late May.
Also appearing on the front vestibule of the library is the Friends of the Library Free Little Library. While not affiliated with the national nonprofit organization Free Little Library, Bryant and co-manager Jacqueline Hulse said there is a need was seen for children’s books to be available outside of regular library hours.
Operating on the “Need a Book, Take a Book” principle, the refurbished newspaper rack is on the front steps of the library at 871 Main St.
