Ranger – Local schoolchildren and their driver escaped injury when a vehicle’s trailer came loose and crashed into a Cherokee County Schools bus Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred on U.S. 64 West around Hilltop Road about 2:40 p.m., shortly after school let out, when a westbound vehicle lost its trailer, which coasted across the median strip and crashed into an eastbound bus, N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Shaun Wilson said. The trailer struck the driver side of the school bus, which came to a stop in the passing lane.
Conditions at the time were sunny, dry and chilly. The damage to the bus was relatively minor, although school maintenance personnel had to remove loose metal parts before towing.
The driver of the other vehicle involved waited for authorities to arrive and was able to continue on their way after reconnecting the trailer. There were no injuries, and the schoolchildren were transferred to another bus to continue on their way home.
