Andrews – A local woman was found dead last week, and her alleged murderer was found dead in the late woman’s car only two days later.
On April 22, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at 56 Poplar Cove, according to a release. Upon arrival, responders found Windy Thompson deceased and suspected that a homicide had occurred. In addition, Thompson’s vehicle was missing from her residence.
The sheriff’s office and N.C. State Bureau of Investigations conducted an investigation and identified Benjamin Fowler of Cherokee County, S.C., as a suspect in the homicide. Local detectives then initiated contact with South Carolina law enforcement.
On April 24, South Carolina authorities received information that Fowler had committed suicide in Thompson’s missing vehicle. The release says it was confirmed that the deceased was, in fact, Fowler – and that the vehicle in which he was found was, in fact, the missing vehicle.
Sheriff Dustin Smith extended his “deep appreciation” to the law enforcement officers within his agency and partner agencies, who all helped bring this case to a quick conclusion.
