Peachtree – A brighter, cleaner newly renovated facility was celebrated on Oct. 20 at the Peachtree Community Center.
Mayor Tim Radford opened the ceremony followed by Rev. Noah Crowe of Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church, who led in prayer.
The gathering consisted of about 40 people, all of whom came out to recognize the efforts of the Peachtree Community Club at 125 Memory Lane, as well as to see the facility’s updates.
The center was built in the mid-1970s and has been a hub for gatherings of a wide variety of events ever since. Club members care for and maintain the building.
Some of the many events that have graced the facility include a “Stop the Bleed” class, monthly grocery bingo, parties, kids summer programs, dinners, meetings, yard sales, luncheons and craft shows as well as a polling place for local, state and federal elections. With a full calendar of events, the community center is one of the happening places to go to in Peachtree.
In 2009, with the help of the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners, the club was able to install a new roof on the facility.
More recent renovations include bringing the restrooms up to Americans With Disabilities Act standards; purchasing a new toilet, ice machine, tables, kitchen stove and faucet; installing interior lighting and replacing pedestal fans. They have also enlarged the kitchen, painted, installed WiFi and dealt with a termite issue.
Many of the updates, repairs and maintenance have come from the club itself with funds generated from events, fundraisers, donations and rental fees from vendors of the Holiday Craft Show, along with those renting the facility for other uses. The Peachtree Community Club thanked the board of commissioners, as well as many supporters, for their contributions in helping make the center what it is today.
During the ceremony, one long-standing volunteer and club member, Marcil Hurt, was honored. Her 40-year span of involvement with the Peachtree Community Development Club has earned her much appreciation. She is also the club president.
Marcil and her husband, Ronnie, have worked faithfully to maintain the center. As a result of their time and effort spent involved with and care of the center, the conference room was dedicated in their honor. A plaque at the door reads: “The Ronnie & Marcil Hurt Conference Room.”
In addition, Marcil was awarded the Governor’s Medallion for Volunteer Service for 2024.
“I was honored to travel to Raleigh to be a part of the special ceremony where Marcil received the medallion,” Radford said.
Earlier this year, with hard work and dedication to the community, the Peachtree Community Development Club was honored as the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce’s Organization of the Year.
“I want to congratulate the Peachtree Community Center on their impressive building updates. A special thank you to everyone who attended today’s open house and to all the volunteers who generously give their time, talent, and resources,” Radford said.
“The Peachtree Community Club plays a vital role in our community, and these upgrades will allow them to continue offering valuable programs and services that benefit us all.”
Jeanie Setser Teague is the club’s treasurer.
“We want people to know that this is here. We’d like anyone to come and join us,” she said. “Membership is free, and we’d love to have new vendors, we need ideas and faces.”
