Workers replace the roof of Harshaw Chapel in downtown Murphy on Friday as part of a renovation that will also restore the building’s steeple. The church is one of the oldest still standing structures in Cherokee County. Local contractor Wolfgang Raffler is restoring the chapel to its earliest known exterior appearance. Friends of Harshaw Chapel was able to obtain $25,000 in grants from Partners for Sacred Places, the Cherokee County Tourism Authority gave $35,000, and $100,000 has been raised through fundraising and donations. The project still needs about $6,000 for interior work. Details: Visit murphyfirstumc.org.
