Murphy – Among the noise of the world’s events, Thursday was set aside for quiet and peaceful reflection of faith and gratitude toward God during the National Day of Prayer.
About 80 people came out midday to take part in the annual event on the steps of the Cherokee County Courthouse downtown.
President Joe Biden proclaimed May 2, 2024, a National Day of Prayer. In part, the proclamation reads: “On this National Day of Prayer, we recognize the power of prayer to strengthen our spirits, draw us together and create hope for a better tomorrow.”

Among the attendees were community and church leaders, local law enforcement, business owners, teachers and Mayor Tim Radford.
The event started with the Pledge of Allegiance and worship, followed by reading 2 Samuel 22:29-31 by Jeff York and reading the 2024 National Prayer by pastor Chris West of Shepherd of the Mountains Church.
Pastor Jimmy Tanner of Murphy First Baptist Church prayed for the government, including federal, state and local personnel. A special prayer was said for Israel by Eddis Dockery, longtime pastor of Boiling Springs Baptist Church.
Bob Weinkle, a retired lieutenant colonel from the U.S. Marine Corps, took the stage to pray for the military. Folks in the crowd appeared attentive, despite the noise from surrounding traffic.
Others who prayed publicly included pastor Shawn Campbell of Shepherd of the Mountains, for families and children; Justin Daugherty, student pastor of MountainView Church, for education and schools; Patrick Garrett, pastor of Journey Fellowship, for churches; Terry Jones, who prayed for businesses; and Sheriff Dustin Smith, who prayed for law enforcement officers and first responders, while paying special attention to the four officers who died last week in Charlotte.
“On this National Day of Prayer, Murphy reflects on its blessings. We come together, regardless of faith, to seek guidance and strength. Prayer allows us to pause, express gratitude and lift up our community. I’m grateful for all those involved in today’s event. It was truly a day of unity, compassion and hope for a brighter future,” Radford said.
The event concluded with a Scripture reading from 2 Chronicles 7:14, along with more praise and worship.
