Ranger – For three hours on Saturday evening, Mountain Folk Center was transformed into the town of Bethlehem. The lines were long, and folks appeared to come from every direction to gather and celebrate the birth of Jesus.
Once inside, there were many sights to behold. About 26 vendor booths made up of different church organizations offered everything from cookies, candy, hot dogs and cider to air-fried biscuits, hot chocolate, soaps, oranges and apples.
Several games could be played for various prizes including chips and sodas. Everything was at no cost, including cross necklaces as well as small silver cross charms, ornaments, glow sticks and prayer blankets. Bibles, spiritual and youth books were also given to anyone wanting them.
Shawn and Christina Mashburn were vendors at the event.
“It’s all worth it if one person gets saved,” he said.
Odd noises could be heard at one end of the gathering. Upon closer inspection it was evident that “Bethlehem” also had animals on site including chickens, goats and a donkey.
Shepherds and angels were spotted walking through the crowds, as the story of the birth of Christ was told through a short play that occurred several times throughout the evening. Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus – along with the wise men and shepherds – helped unfold the drama for all in attendance.
The weather was cool but the environment warm as everyone appeared to enjoy the event. About 850 people were in attendance, with at least three people expressing faith in Christ.
The event was created by pastor Preston Mashburn of Household of Faith Baptist Church in 2018 as a way to show the true meaning of Christmas.
“It was great and the attendance was better than any other year,” he said. “I’d like to thank everyone who was involved.”
Paula Fox came out to the event and simply put it, “I’ve always enjoyed coming. I come here every year, and it tells the story of Jesus. It never gets old.”
