Murphy – Town council member Keisha Dockery, who was elected in 2021, has announced that she is resigning effective Sept. 1. Mayor Tim Radford accepted her resignation at Monday’s town council meeting.
In a letter to Murphy residents and town officials, Dockery, owner of The Black & White Market downtown, said she “will no longer meet the qualifications to serve as I am moving out of the area.”

Dockery told the town council Monday that she is moving to Union County, Ga., seeking a better education for her child. She will continue her business in Murphy.
“I thank each person that voted for me to hold this position. I wish our community and town the best, especially all the amazing small businesses,” she wrote. “The town is making strides in growing and beautifying our downtown, promoting tourism and helping businesses thrive, and I look forward to continuing being a part of it.”
During her three years on the board, Dockery helped lead the charge to close the narrow alley next to her business and turn it into a destination. The Fain Alley Music Series is now held there from 5-7 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month from May through October.
Dockery also proposed creating a social district downtown, which was ultimately turned down after months of meetings.
Council member Frank Dickey apologized for giving her a hard time during her time on the council, praising her for her work and “heavy lifting.” The two often clashed during meetings.
Dockery said she was “passionate and gung ho” during her first year in office as she settled into the job. She will continue to be involved in the town after her move.
