Chastain
Murphy – To ensure continued representation, town council members filled a vacancy on Sept. 5, when Cindy Chastain was appointed to serve. She will be officially sworn into office Monday, Oct. 2.
The vacancy arose when town council member Barbara Hughes announced her resignation in June. According to N.C. General Statutes 160A-63, municipalities are instructed to fill such vacancies by an appointment made by sitting council members, serving until the end of the vacated term.
Chastain, a lifelong resident of Cherokee County and member of the Murphy community for the last 24 years, brings a wealth of experience along with an unwavering commitment to the betterment of the town, according to a release.
With a career spanning more than 30 years with the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Chastain has dedicated her professional life to serving her community. Alongside her husband, Johnny Chastain, she has raised two adult children and is the proud grandmother of four grandchildren.
Chastain said her motivation to serve on the town council stems from her deep-rooted connection to the community and a sincere desire to advocate for the needs and concerns of residents. She envisions a Murphy that fosters unity, promotes community events and ensures that the voices of all residents are heard.
Throughout her career and personal life, Chastain has been actively involved in community clubs, Extension and community associations, 4-H Clubs, Master Gardener volunteers, Cherokee County Fair committees and the Murphy Business Association’s downtown Christmas celebration.
Chastain said her vision for Murphy includes maintaining a pedestrian-friendly downtown, striking a balance between vehicular mobility and pedestrian accessibility. She is committed to enhancing local amenities, promoting cultural events and creating spaces that bring people together – especially projects involving youth.
One of Chastain’s strengths lies in her ability to collaborate with neighboring communities, government agencies and nonprofit organizations, the release says, ensuring that the town’s interests are well represented.
Looking to the future, Chastain said she recognizes that change is inevitable, but with the right vision and dedication, town leaders can create a legacy that future generations will inherit with pride. Her aspiration is to contribute to the development of a prosperous, sustainable and vibrant Murphy where all residents, young and old, can proudly call home.
Mayor Tim Radford expressed confidence in the council’s selection.
“Cindy is a highly respected member of our community, and I have no doubt that she will make a valuable and dedicated addition to the Murphy Town Council,” Radford said. “Her passion for our town and her deep roots here make her an ideal candidate to serve our community. I look forward to Cindy’s contributions to our town and to the positive impact she will undoubtedly have on the continued growth and prosperity of Murphy.”
