Peachtree – The young and young at heart came out for the Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church car and craft show on May 18 to raise money for kids.
The cars were presented by D&J Car Show and brought out about 40 proud owners and their head-turning vehicles. Spectators perused the parking lot as motor muscles flexed with the sounds of rolling thunder.
Craft vendors were also on site as well as food for anyone wanting a quick lunch while walking around. The car show’s purpose was to help raise funds for the church’s youth group at Peachtree Memorial Baptist.
Landon Linderfelt, 10, attends Peachtree Elementary School. He enjoys coming out to these types of shows.
“I like seeing big motors,” he said with an affirming nod.
Landon believes he’ll own a classic vehicle in the future. His dream car is a 1965 Fastback Mustang.
“I’d like to have it in a nice old red,” he said matter of factly.
Landon’s buddy Sawyer Crowder, who also attends Peachtree Elementary, was at the car show. He likes older cars as well. His dream car is a “1988 Mustang Hatchback with a GT 500 motor,” adding “in black.”
Ronnie Roberts of Andrews proudly displayed his 2002 Honda S-2000 with a Corvette engine, to which he adds Nitrous Oxide, Methanol and racing fuel. Roberts has pushed the 1200 HP vehicle to about 160 mph.
Roberts said he has always been into cars; as a kid he used to “soup-up” lawnmowers. What he likes most about these vehicles is the horsepower and looks. He’s been doing car shows for about seven years and isn’t concerned about fingerprints.
“I want everybody to enjoy coming out,” he said.
Roberts once went to an auto show and saw a little boy looking at his vehicle.
“I told him to get in it and then I cranked it up for him. The youngster said back, ‘It sounds like a hundred thousand angry alligators.’ That made my day.”
His wife, Diana, supports him all the way. With four kids, there’s no doubt he’s passing on his love of these vehicles.
Two spectators at the car show were Ken and Laurie Schneider of Warne. They chose a blue and white ‘56 Ford as their favorite car of the day. It reminded Laurie of one from her past as a kid in the ‘60s.
“We would bounce in the backseat, no seat belts,” she said, giggling. “We had a great time, it was so much fun.”
The skies were overcast, but the rain held off, keeping the pet-friendly event dry and enjoyable for everyone.
