Murphy – The Cherokee County United Methodist Men’s Fellowship held a chili supper fundraiser on Nov. 11 that brought folks out to help a good cause.
The weather made it more difficult to bring folks out. However, the annual event was a success, with about 80 people attending the supper. Several folks purchased tickets but were unable to attend, so those tickets were passed on to local law enforcement officers.
“This is the 21st year we’ve done this,” said David Hotchkiss, the group’s secretary. “A lot of folks will buy an $8 ticket and give us $10, telling us to keep the change. We’re expecting to raise about $1,100, which is good because everything was donated, like the food and drinks.”
The proceeds of this fundraiser will be divided up among such organizations as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cherokee County, Boy Scouts of the Daniel Boone Council, Cherokee County Sharing Center food pantry, Good Samaritan Fund, HAVEN Children’s Advocacy Center, General Conference of the United Methodist Men, Hurlburt-Johnson Friendship House homeless shelter, Renewed Hope Ministries and the Wesley Foundation at the University of Western North Carolina.
The tickets allowed one to partake in an all-you-can-eat chili dinner, including cole slaw, corn bread, drinks and a wide variety of desserts, like cookies, pies, brownies, chewy bars and pudding. Folks appeared to enjoy tasting some of the 12 different types of chili on display, which included white chili as well as spicy chili and green chili.
The men’s group also puts on other fundraisers, including a spaghetti dinner as well as a newly started barbecue supper, at different times throughout the year.
