Brasstown – John C. Campbell Folk School’s scenic 270-acre campus will soon bustle with thousands of people as the school hosts its 46th annual Fall Festival this weekend. Open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., this year’s theme – “Good to be Together” – nods toward the isolation and separation folk communities felt during the COVID-19 lockdown.
After passing under a bespoke banner quilted by Zak Foster, Olive’s Porch artist in residence, visitors can stroll through several wooded paths, visiting a wide variety of fine craft exhibitors showcasing their craft. On the school’s Demonstrator’s Stage near the Keith House, many artisans will demonstrate traditional and contemporary crafts for guests throughout the day.
Adding to the energy of the celebration, the folk school will provide music and dance performances on the Festival Barn and Craft Shop Stages. Popular acts including Evie & Keith Terry, Benjamin Hunter and the Folk School Junior Appalachian Musicians will share old-time, bluegrass, folk and roots music. While guests are encouraged to dance along, there will be professional dancers and cloggers performing as well.
The popular local band Irons in the Fire will close out the festival Sunday afternoon, which will mark their reunion after several years.
Visitors should plan to come hungry, as the folk school’s signature barbecue will be served in front of the Olive Dame Dining Hall. Picnic tables and food vendors will be found in the Festival Barn, with some vendors at Davidson Hall.
However, the event isn’t limited to those shopping for handmade crafts or those wanting to indulge in a festive meal. Children can visit the Kids Cove area, where they will enjoy face painting, petting the alpacas and visiting the Valley River Humane Society’s pet adoption booth. The Cove Theatre will offer children an opportunity to participate in creative play with dress up costumes and musical instruments.
The event coordinators have included a free on-campus shuttle bus and handicapped golf carts for those in need. Handicapped parking is available in the Keith House gravel lot and adjacent to the Fiber Arts Building.
The Cherokee County Arts Council will offer a selection of Fall Festival T-shirts, and items will be available to purchase in the T-shirt booth in the Craft Shop parking lot. The folk school has been celebrating Appalachian craft, culture and heritage since 1974.
To avoid long lines to purchase the $10 (ages 18 and up), $8 (12-17, veterans and seniors 65 and up) tickets, purchase online. Tickets are also available at the gates for cash only. ATMs are available on campus. For details, visit folkschool.org/fallfestival or call 1-800-365-5724.
