Murphy – Children and parents came out to the L&N Depot downtown on Aug. 20 for a little song and dance.
Olive’s Porch invited children from babies to age 8 to participate in a “Little Olive’s” music and dance class. The class was intended to get young children involved in music and body movement.
Everyone was welcomed to participate. However, some appeared to just enjoy sitting and listening to the music by Sheila Kay Adams and Susan Pepper.
“We’re so excited to be downtown in the community and have the opportunity to connect with our local population and visitors through different program offerings,” said Caitlin Adair Daglis, community programs coordinator for Olive’s Porch. “Little Olive’s” is special because we love getting the little’s involved with the Appalachian traditions, like old-time music and dance.”
About 15 people came to the session, which lasted an hour. There was also some storytelling.
The next session was held last Saturday, with another one set from 9-9:45 a.m. this Saturday. The L&N depot is at 4 Railroad St.
Olive’s Porch is a John C. Campbell Folk School experience, offering workshops that are focused on traditional Appalachian crafts, music, dance and community events. For details, visit olivesporch.org.
