Culberson – Calls went out at 5:11 p.m. Sept. 1 for Cherokee County Emergency Medical Services and fire departments to respond to a residential structure fire at 72 Walk Trail.
The fire appeared to start with a spark from a grill, according to the homeowner .
“We had just finished cooking our dinner and went inside when we saw a spark and it caught on fire,” she said. “We got the fire extinguisher, but it wasn’t enough, so he got the hose.”
Far more help would be needed, as the fire burned hot and fast. Thousands of gallons of water were used on the structure, as well as firefighting foam to help add additional suppressant to flames and fuel vapors.
The homeowners were able to exit the structure with their two pets. One person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Just after 10 p.m. that evening, the Culberson Volunteer Fire Department was called back out for a rekindling of the fire. The Ranger Volunteer Fire Department was also paged again to bring in its tanker, adding that much more water to the structure, which had begun to collapse.
