Andrews – A silver stunner is set to be the Andrews Cruise Night & Car Show feature car Saturday night.
The 1970 Boss 302 Mustang is owned by Gayland Trull of Mineral Bluff, Ga., who has always had his eye on the Ford Mustang. Trull has owned the car for two years, buying it from a listing on Facebook Marketplace. He has had an interest in classic Mustangs particularly after owning his dream car in the 1970s.
“I owned a new 1970 Mach One Mustang that I bought off the showroom floor from Wade Brooks at Brooks Ford in Andrews,” Trull said. “I sold it to get a pickup truck because I needed to haul my tools for my carpenter work.”
The Mustang was a 1970 Mach One with an automatic transmission. Trull said he drove by and saw the brightly colored car and fell in love with it.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about it so I turned around and went back,” he said. “I talked to Wade Brooks, and I thought, ‘Wait a minute, I could make this work.’ ”
Trull traded in his yellow 1966 Ford Fairlane for the “Grabber Green” Mustang. As a 20-year-old man, he said he thought he had died and gone to heaven when he drove away in the new car.
After seeing the 1970 Boss 302 Mustang for sale, Trull knew he wanted to have his dream car again.
“One thing I like about the one I have now is it has a shaker hood, louvers on the back window and a spoiler,” he said.
When Trull went to pick up the car, he said it had been completely rebuilt about 18 years ago and never driven since.
“When I got it, it had 2 miles on it,” he added. “It was completely restored, the man would crank it up every week or so but never drove it.”
Trull went to get the car with his son, Jeff Trull, who is a mechanic. Trull said in 10 minutes, his son had it ready to drive around the block.
Today, Trull has driven it about 300 miles only taking it to local events like cruise nights and car shows. The interior is black leather, completely original to the car. The transmission is a four-speed, which Trull said makes it fun to drive.
Trull, manager of Western Carolina Regional Airport, also owns a 1966 Two Plus Tow Fastback Ford Mustang that is red both in exterior and interior. This car has an automatic transmission and all original interior as well.
Trull said he likes to take his cars on cruise nights in Andrews, which have started to be a once-a-month event featuring local restaurants to help boost local businesses.
The Andrews Cruise Night will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday at the old Food Lion Parking Lot on Main Street. The entry fee for vehicles is a $10 donation, which will go toward Cruise Night’s annual Christmas Party for the Kids.
The event will have winners for Mayor’s Choice, Driver’s Choice and People’s Choice as well as a 50/50 drawing. Cruising will begin around 7 p.m. and again about an hour later. For details, call organizer Jimmy Hyde at 557-2682.
