Andrews Several thousand people came out to downtown on what turned put to be a beautiful Saturday to enjoy the 11th annual Christmas on Main.
A long line of vehicles preceded the festival, with vendors ready to get in and set up their displays. The popular festival is the unofficial kickoff to Christmastime in Cherokee County.
The weather appeared threatening in the morning and some vendors were concerned about the forecasted rain and wind. However, through a few grey clouds passing by, the skies were blue and bright, and warmth filled the air.
Newly re-elected Mayor James Reid began the festival with the lighting of the town’s Christmas tree. A prayer was said, and the names of community members who have passed on were read before a moment of silence was observed.
Folks appeared to be in good spirits, and the pavement didn’t receive a break from constant foot traffic. Music was enjoyed at different areas of the festival, children were walking around with their faces painted and no one went hungry unless it was their idea.
Young and young at heart boarded a trackless train with Santa Claus at the wheel. The train proceeded up and down Main Street, with passengers waving and wishing folks a “Merry Christmas.”
A woodworker and a blacksmith were displaying their crafts with demonstrations, allowing folks to see how items were in the process of being made increased interest and providing some knowledge for their curiosity. Downtown stores and restaurants were open during the festival, giving shoppers enhanced choices and experiences which added to their day out.
Organizers were pleased with the turnout. The festival ended an hour earlier than in previous years, giving vendors an opportunity to pack up before darkness set in.
