Murphy – What a fun-filled and exciting day it was for children at the downtown library on June 2.
Thanks to North Georgia Wildlife & Safari Park owner, animal handler and instructor Tom Bennett, kids were treated to a sensory experience to be remembered.
Children and adults were able to see and in most cases touch different animals typically unseen in Cherokee County. Animals like a white Chinchilla, a South America toad named “Trevor” and “Bob,” a blue-tongued skink from Australia who enjoys eating mice and bugs.
Bennett shared information about each of his animals while answering questions from children. He also dispelled the myth that toads can give you warts.
The children screeched as Bennett reached into his pillowcase bag and pulled out a Madagascar Brown Boa. The snake’s name is “Fluffy” which brought about a few chuckles from the audience.
Bennett has a biology education degree and has taught in public schools.
“It’s great sharing animals with children. Libraries are my favorite programs because they get a nice mix of people and they’re always interested in learning more,” he said.
Other animal shows were held at libraries in Andrews, Hayesville and Robbinsville.
