Hiawassee, Ga. – About 140 people – including chamber members, business owners, friends and special guests – were part of the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce’s 55th annual dinner meeting Thursday evening at The Ridges Resort.
The event celebrated those who stand out for their dedication and achievements in the community.
The environment was cheerful with a steady buzz of folks talking, laughing and sharing a drink together during the networking portion of the evening. Dinner was a rustic Tuscan buffet.
Opening remarks were spoken by Murphy Mayor Tim Radford, followed by a greeting and introduction from chamber Executive Director Victoria Ivie. Awards were presented to members of the community by the chamber and Industrial Opportunities Inc. throughout the evening.
- Citizen of the Year. Becca McNabb was honored for her commitment to the county through her extensive service on different boards of directors, past and present. Her contributions include the Murphy Business Association, Cherokee County Arts Council and her dedicated role on the chamber’s executive committee.
One of McNabb’s achievements this year was her leadership in spearheading the Murphy Spring Festival. As a result of her marketing efforts, the event attracted more than 100 vendors, several performers and drew numerous people to the event, which generated significant economic benefit for the area.
- Business of the Year. Hoppy Trout Brewing Co. was honored for its involvement in hosting chamber after-hours events, which creates valuable networking and engagement opportunities. Hoppy Trout was also recognized for an array of activities for patrons including trivia nights, magical performances and paint parties that keep the community connected through entertainment.
Hoppy Trout has generosity provided fundraising opportunities for organizations, including the Valleytown Cultural Arts Association, Valley River Humane Society and Andrews Public Library. Kam and Corey Thompson of Hoppy Trout happily accepted the award.
- Organization of the Year. The Peachtree Community Club was honored for its contributions to the community with events like a summer Fun Day, festive Holiday Art Market and monthly Grocery Bingo nights. They provide community activities and education, and is a venue for life events.
The Peachtree club has also hosted on-site seminars, including training like “Stop the Bleed,” and digital technology courses, partnering with local experts to enhance the skills and safety of residents.
In keeping with tradition, Industrial Opportunities Inc. also presented Disability Awareness Awards to two community standouts, who were honored for their perseverance and dedication in the workforce:
- Sonia Rhodes was awarded for her efforts in overcoming barriers to employment. She has been continuously employed since 2005.
- Wesley Totherow has a total work history of 26 years and, although quiet, is always helpful and cheerful.
IOI is a nonprofit organization based in Andrews that serves adults with disabilities from Cherokee, Clay and Graham counties in western North Carolina.
As with many events, folks sought to capture lasting memories through photos. Jubilee Party & Event Rentals, with Brooke Adams and Autumn Berrong, made sure a photo booth on site was stocked with an array of silly and colorful glasses for attendees to don. There were also several door prizes given via raffles.
