Murphy – The Rotary Club of Murphy hosted AfterHours, a monthly program sponsored by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, in the newly christened Fain Alley on June 29.
The event is meant to give business owners and community members a chance to network through introductions and conversations. Rotarian Ann Lukens was excited to be there.
“This is a great partnership between Rotary and the chamber,” she said.
Tina Hill – executive assistant to chamber President Sherry Raines, who also happens to be past-president of the Rotary Club – said it was her job.
“We get to know each other and help each other out,” she said. “It’s what we are supposed to do – help our business inside the chamber.”
Kelly Roberts, executive director of Murphy Rehabilitation & Nursing, agreed with Hill.
“I came out to support other people and see how we can help each other,” she said.
Despite temperamental weather, June’s event brought a crowd of people to the fairy-lit alley. Folks gathered at tables enjoying Italian ciabatta sandwiches and buffalo chicken from The Mason Bar.
A silent auction ran throughout the event to raise money for the Rotary Club’s international project Wells for Nora. The project partners with LivingWatersCanda to dig a new well each year in Kenya, Africa, to honor missionary-minded Nora Starks, who was killed in a car accident at age 17 on Murphy High School’s prom night.
Rotary is also holding a Cruise for CART – Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust – raffle to raise money for Alzheimer’s research. Tickets for $25 each. The winner will receive a four-day, three-night cruise for two people on Carnival Cruise Lines with your choice of ports of departure:
- Jacksonville, Fla., to Freeport and Bimini in the Bahamas.
- Port Canaveral, Fla., to Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas.
- Miami to Key West, Fla., and Cozumel, Mexico.
- Los Angeles to Catalina, Calif., and Ensenada, Mexico.
The drawing will take place Aug. 1. The voucher must be used before Nov. 8, 2024. For details, visit the Rotary Club of Murphy’s Facebook page.
