Andrews – David Howell had an idea.
“I just wanted to create an interesting evening for our guests in the community,” he said, referring to The Blue Stage’s season 1 of “Andrews Idol.” Personalizing the popular show American Idol, the local business owner is excited about the contest.
“It’s a chance to showcase talent in the area,” Howell said. “What better way than to win some money while they’re doing it?”
And the cash prizes are pretty plump. The first-place singer will win a cool $1,000, with second place bringing home $500. Howell winnowed the applicants to 32 competitors, who will compete in groups of eight on consecutive Saturday nights.
“Our panel of regional judges will narrow down the competition to 16 for the quarterfinals, eight for the semis and then four for the final round,” he said. Howell added that the judges have musical training and performance backgrounds.
Each applicant had to send in a two-minute audio file. Howell even received one from a performer living in Los Angeles.
“We don’t care about your address or your background,” he said, stressing that the event is meant to be about the performers. The only criteria is that the contestants be at least 18 to audition for the show.
“Andrews Idol” opens at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 15, inside the The Blue Stage on Main Street downtown.
“Tickets are $20, and we expect the show to run three hours-plus,” Howell said.
The Blue Stage serves beer and wine along with non-alcoholic drinks. It will have food trucks available on show nights. Details: thebluestage@gmail.com.
