Peachtree – A group of friends who meet at Erlanger FitPlus each week came together Monday morning to celebrate Austin Grindle turning 100 years old this week.
Grindle, who grew up in Maine, served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943-46, becoming a corporal. After his service, he worked as an insurance salesman in northern Connecticut.
In 2003, Grindle and his wife, Florence, moved to Murphy, where they have lived for 22 years. For 19 of those years, Grindle has used the same U.S. 64 East Alternate gym location that today is Erlanger FitPlus.
“The people here at the gym are great. Some of the best friends I’ve had my entire life,” Grindle said.
The party attendees feel the same way toward Grindle. Many expressed gratitude to have Grindle in their lives and hope to celebrate many more years with him.
“Every day I come in that Austin is here, he greets me by name. He always asks how I’m doing and is a joy to be around,” said Betsy, a friend of his.
Grindle has also served as an inspiration to many gym-goers.
“It’s incredible to see someone reach this milestone in life, and still be active and engaged with everyone. He remembers everyone’s name and the stories they tell. He’s here each and every week to work out. He inspires a lot of us to stay dedicated to our health journey,” another friend said.
In addition to being surrounded by friends and enjoying a special cake, the manager of Erlanger FitPlus gave Grindle a lifetime membership to the gym.
Grindle attributes a lot of his success and happiness in life to his wife.
“In 100 years, I’ve learned it takes a good wife and hard work to get through,” he said. “I wouldn’t be where I am without Florence.”
In his free time, Grindle enjoys gardening and lawn care.
When asked how he planned to spend the rest of his day, he said, “I’m going to go home and hop on my zero-turn to mow the lawn.”
His son recently moved from Maine to Murphy, and Grindle is looking forward to spending more time with him.
