Andrews – What started as a showcase and raffle fundraiser for local artist Tom Vogler turned into a family reunion with the artist’s brother and sister visiting the Andrews Public Library in September.
Curated by retired branch co-manager Kelly Bryant and overseen by library co-manager Jacqueline Hulse and newest library assistant Karen Taylor, the show turned into a chance for the siblings to share in their brother’s contribution to the local arts.
Vogler and his wife, Teresa, were “overjoyed” to share the display of Vogler’s newest works, along with his assorted collection which permanently resides in the library.
“We’ve gotten to spend a week together for the first time in a long time and for that we’re grateful,” Teresa said.
Vogler’s brother Darrell and his wife, Debbie, came to visit from Jacksonville, Fla. They were ecstatic to meet many of Tom’s local friends and library family.
“It’s been a whirlwind visit, but we’re happy to be together to be in the same room for the first time in 35 years,” Darrell said of the reunion.
Too, Vogler’s sister Mary Ann and her husband, Joe Sayre, were visiting from Youngstown, Ohio. They were proud to share in the community’s celebration of their brother’s artwork and “thankful for a chance to see how much the community supports Tom and Teresa,” Mary Ann said.
Friends of the Andrews Public Library provided light refreshments for the showcase. Members Barbara El-Khouri and Sandy Lathrop were delighted to see the turnout of 50-plus people to celebrate the occasion and support local art.
The quarterly art show was also offering raffle chances for one of Vogler’s works to help raise funds to offset medical expenses from a heart attack he suffered in early 2023.
“Tom has been an integral part of our artists’ community in Andrews and Cherokee County, and we’re always ready and willing to help him and his family in any way we can,” Bryant said.
Hulse said the fundraiser sold three paintings and raised more than $900, with the ongoing raffle for one of the paintings with tickets at $20 each anticipated to raise even more funds. Tickets are available at the library during regular business hours.
Vogler’s popular landscapes can be found in several local businesses. They are also offered for purchase at the Andrews Public Library, 871 Main St.
