Murphy – Ever wonder what it’s like to fly from Andrews to Murphy? Or other places in North Carolina? Or thousands of places in the world?
Now’s your chance, and you can do it from your mobile device or television.
“My name is Joaquín Gelmini, and I sent the video flying through your city in Microsoft Flight Simulator, a simulator that replicates our entire planet at a 1:1 scale in real time,” Gelmini said in an email to the Cherokee Scout.
“This simulator employs satellite imagery and artificial intelligence to re-create the world with fidelity to reality. The primary goal of my YouTube channel, JoaHa45, is to embark on a virtual journey around the world. Through this I can explore and appreciate how our countries, cities, towns and even our own homes are represented within the simulator.”
Gelmini is from Buenos Aires, Argentina. His YouTube channel has more than 3,100 videos, including 674 that explore the United States.
His channel, which has just over 2,000 subscribers, also has flights across other countries, including Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Spain.
“My journey began on Sept. 18, 2020, at Morón Airport in Buenos Aires, Argentina. From that starting point, I planned and executed a flight route that would take me around the world,” he said.
His flight over Cherokee County is flight No. 480 and was recorded around May. As of Friday, it had 18 views, one like and no comments; at least two of those views were by the Scout.
In the video, which is just over 12 minutes long, he takes off in a single-engine passenger plane from Western Carolina Regional Airport and flies west, circling Murphy before returning to Andrews.
It’s a leisurely flight with no stunts, using the kind of airplane commonly seen at the local airport. The weather is sunny and cloudless, and it appears to be spring or summer.
