Andrews – The Andrews Public Library has acquired a 3D printer to serve as its first piece in its new MakerSpace for 2024.
Branch co-manager Kelly Pierce Bryant said all staff will be fully trained in operating the printer by the first of the year and that policies are being drafted by the time it’s ready to be offered for public use.
“We’re trying to implement a policy that will fairly allow the public to use the printer for various objects which will include time restrictions, size restrictions and becoming trained on utilizing the printer to best serve the public’s needs,” she said.
Those needs will be translated by downloadable programs of objects cleared for printing. These objects – which can be at least the size of a human heart, according to branch co-manager Jacqueline Hulse – will also be subject to the staff’s approval as part of the usage policy.
According to Bryant and Hulse, there will also be a minimal materials fee for the filament required, which is still to be determined to process objects.
