Andrews – Western Carolina Regional Airport “looks like Christmas at nighttime” following installation of a new lighting system, with a list of other projects recently completed or about to get underway.
Airport Director Maria Hass submitted a list of achievements to the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners.
“As most of you know, we have been moving full steam ahead at the airport, since being given back the reins a couple of years ago,” Hass said. “Here is what we have accomplished, thus far.”
- Updated the camera system, which deterred after-hours traffic.
- With the completion of new security gates, vehicular traffic in the air traffic safety areas was eliminated.
- Secured a jet fuel truck to serve large jets, which has increased jet fuel sales. Jet fuel sales is the airport’s bread and butter, Hass added.
- Upgraded to a new self-serve fueling system.
- Hired a full-time on-site manager and hiring an additional seasonal employee.
- Just this month, completed a state-of-the-art lighting project paid for with a $1.15 million grant.
- Archaeological study completed. It was required to move forward with relocating a weather system to county-owned property.
- Completed several obstruction removal and tree clearing projects in preparation of the new airport beacon towers project.
“We were approved for a grant to replace the four existing towers, which are currently antiquated and inoperable,” Hass said. “The project should be ready for bidding soon, and construction will hopefully be complete by fall.”
The airport will be applying for grant funds in 2026 to build a new terminal, if matching funds are available or if no match is required.
“Following new terminal planning, we would like to explore the possibility of conducting additional arch surveys to determine possible locations for new hangar construction,” she said.
Hass also praised airport Manager Chris Williams.
“Over the time he has been there, he has painted and spruced up the offices, and he keeps the place exceptionally clean and orderly; in addition to managing the day to day operations and being the friendly, professional face of the airport,” Hass said.
“He also stayed on top of things, and checked in with me and his staff often, even when he was out on medical leave, so I really appreciate his passion and dedication.
“Thank you all for your support. I know we have been doing a lot of capital projects and spending money to bring the airport into compliance, but once we are where we need to be, we will begin to see and enjoy the fruits of our/your labor and support,” Hass told the board of commissioners.
