Murphy – Two incumbents face challengers on the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners in the Tuesday, March 5, primary, while all three incumbents on the board of education are running unopposed.
A major election year is coming in 2024, with U.S. president and U.S. House of Representatives on the ballot as well as N.C. governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, auditor, commissioner of agriculture, commissioner of insurance, commissioner of labor, secretary of state, superintendent of public instruction, treasurer, supreme and appeals court seats. At the regional level, N.C. House and Senate seats are on the ballot, along with District Court District 43 judge seats.
Local races include two seats on the county board of commissioners and three seats on the school board.
Alan Bryant of Hiwassee Dam has filed to run against incumbent Jan Griggs for the Republican nomination in District 5.
Justin Hyde of Andrews has filed to run against incumbent Randy Phillips for the Republican nomination in District 2. Hyde has until Thursday to complete the paperwork.
For the Cherokee County Board of Education, incumbents James Ellis and Jeff Tatham have filed to keep their two District 1 school board seats.
Incumbent Arnold Mathews has filed to keep his District 2 seat and has until Thursday to complete the paperwork.
No Democrats filed in local races.
In regional races, incumbent state Sen. Kevin Corbin (R-Franklin) is running alone in the GOP primary for District 50. Adam Tebrugge of Cullowhee is running in the Democratic primary.
Incumbent N.C. Rep. Karl Gillespie (R-Franklin) is running alone in the GOP primary for N.C. House of Representatives District 120. Former Andrews mayor Nancy Curtis is running unopposed in the Democratic primary and has until Thursday to complete her paperwork.
In N.C. District Court District 43 seat 5 judge, incumbent Tessa Sellers is running unopposed for the Republican nomination, with no Democrats running.
The 2024 general election will be held on Nov. 5, 2024.
