Andrews – Local residents will have two ways to celebrate the 244th birthday of the Marine Corps with special events in two states.
Frank Bailey, commandant of Marine Corps League Detachment 1011 in Cherokee County, and local members are organizing a ball in Andrews.
“It’s going to be a nice event,” he said.
The Andrews ball will be from 6-10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7620, 190 First St. Everyone is welcome to attend the free event, and attire is dressy casual.
The ball, which was previously held in Peachtree, will include the Marines’ traditional cake-cutting ceremony and ceremonial messages.
The detachment will provide the main course, while guests are asked to bring side dishes for a potluck. The event will include a 50/50 raffle.
Bailey is also on the planning committee for a ball in Blairsville, Ga., which is hosted by Marine Corps League Detachment 1438 of Blue Ridge, Ga.
The formal ball will be from 5:30-10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at North Georgia Technical College.
Tickets are $120 per couple, $70 per person, and available at Folger Gas or from any detachment member.
The U.S. Marine Corps was established on Nov. 10, 1775. The birthday was first celebrated with a ball in 1925.
