Murphy – Police are searching for a man they believe burglarized several businesses last weekend.
“We have a suspect,” Police Chief Justin Jacobs said. “We’ve arrested him multiple times for burglary over the past 12 years.”
Officials say at least five businesses, including the No Name Deli on Old Ranger Road, were burglarized between Friday evening and Monday morning. Some vehicles parked outside local businesses were also burglarized.
Though police are still investigating, preliminary reports indicate the thief stole thousands of dollars in cash and at least one firearm.
Police say a majority of nearby businesses were not open over the weekend, and many did not have security cameras or alarms. However, some surveillance cameras did capture a man police arrested for similar crimes in the past walking in the area where the burglaries occurred.
“He normally works alone,” Jacobs said. “He never has anybody with him, and he’s the only person we see in the surveillance video.”
Police issued warrants for the suspect’s arrest. However, officials declined to name him publicly until after his apprehension.
Detectives from the sheriff’s office are also investigating burglaries that occurred outside city limits over the weekend. Authorities do not know if those incidents are connected to the other burglaries that happened in town.
“We don’t know if it’s the same person,” Jacobs said. “But, given the proximity to where the other businesses are, [it could be] the same suspect.”
