Murphy – A N.C. Department of Transportation employee surrendered to authorities last week after a grand jury issued an indictment charging him with sexually assaulting a child.

Robin Farmer Stalcup, 39, of Murphy, is accused of sexually assaulting a girl under age 16 in July, according to court documents related to the case. After an investigation by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from HAVEN Children’s Advocacy Center, the case was presented to a grand jury, which issued an indictment charging Stalcup on Sept. 28.

“Mr. Stalcup adamantly denies this charge and looks forward to being absolved in court,” his attorney, Holly Christy, told the Cherokee Scout.

Stalcup surrendered Thursday. He is accused of indecent liberties with a child, a felony. A judge set a $5,000 unsecured bond, and Stalcup was released.

Stalcup has a history of public service. He is employed as a vehicle equipment repair technician with the DOT after being hired full time on April 14, 2012. His employment status remains the same as of the Scout’s press time Tuesday morning.

Stalcup was previously employed with Cherokee County as a 911 tele-communicator from February 2000 until December 2002, when he was promoted to communications supervisor. He remained in the supervisory role until January 2004, when he resigned.

Stalcup is also president of the Mountain Dizzy Dean youth baseball and softball leagues. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday, Dec. 14.
