Texana – Tyrea Allen will return home as the guest speaker for the 28th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast.
The Texana Community Development Club will sponsor the breakfast at 8 a.m. Monday in the community center on Texana Road. The theme for the event is “Together We Can Make a Difference.” Tickets are $5 each, with kids under age 12 eating free.
Allen, a 2004 graduate of Murphy High School, grew up in Texana, aspiring to have a career in the National Football League. He played football for the Bulldogs, then at Mars Hill University as the first person in his immediate family to attend college.
After college, Allen was not drafted by the NFL, but he did play for the German Football League. Through his experience overseas, he caught the attention of Randy Beverly Jr., son of NFL star Randy Beverly, who helped Allen get a tryout with the Minnesota Vikings. The team only hired two of the 10 prospects, and Allen did not make the team.
Allen continues to stay involved with the sport, working and playing for American Football Events. He recently was hired as the junior varsity head football coach at Rosman High School, where he teaches social studies. Allen said he wants to carry his enthusiasm for working hard as an athlete into his teaching career.
Today, Allen lives in Brevard with his wife and son. For details, call club President Eurial Turner at 678-438-9922.
