Murphy – Oct. 31 would have been Mickie Kingsley’s fifth year artistically transforming the
hair and faces of clients at Shear Monster on Hill Street.
Last month, she and others who had their businesses in the motor court learned they would have to find new homes due to a pending a sale of the property to Murphy Electric Power Board.
“In the beginning, I was angry, sad,” Kingsley said.
She enjoyed the camaraderie with other hairstylists in the motor court, and how they would all help each other out. Some of her clients even enjoyed being able to take their pets to get groomed at Barking Bubbles just across the parking lot as she did their hair.
After two weeks in her new location in Peachtree, Kingsley was happy.
“I love my new place,” she said. “We all have our own new beginnings.”
Dean Harrington is still working on his new beginning for his salon. He was also upset, and wished he could have purchased the property and maintain the history of what was once the Shields Motel.
Harrington said he would love to find a place downtown, but is also thinking about something that would provide the privacy his clients appreciate about the Hill Street location.
Businesses that have planned their new beginnings include:
- AA Central Office, moving last week of August to 17 Valley River Ave. in downtown Murphy.
- Barking Bubbles Pet Salon, moving Sept. 1 to 3000 U.S. 64 W., Suite 116, in Lakeside Plaza.
- Becky’s Hair Design, now at 1821 N.C. 141 in Peachtree Center.
- Shear Monster, now at 3680 U.S. 64 E. Alternate in Peachtree, on the same property as Mountain Storage.
The power board owns the adjacent property at 402 Hill St. It plans to store trucks and equipment on the property, and plans to use it as a staging area.
