Breakfast supports scholarships

Andrews – About 50 people braved the snow Saturday morning to enjoy a hot cooked meal for a good cause. The Konnaheeta Woman’s Club held its annual Sweetheart Breakfast to raise funds for the Ruth Starr Pullium Scholarship Fund.
“It’s just fabulous that people came out to support this,” club President Sherry McCollum said. “We thank each and every one of them.”
“We’re really a little surprised we have this turnout with this weather,” added Jane Carver, the club’s recording secretary.
Club members spent the morning serving eggs, pancakes, sausage, biscuits, bacon and grits to supporters in Andrews First Baptist Church’s fellowship hall. A majority of supporters arrived before the snow intensified, regulars who were happy to continue help the scholarship fund.
“We always support it ... I think the scholarship is very important,” Helen Wilson said. “When I see snow, I usually think twice, but it’s a dry snow so we came down.”
Each year since shortly after Pullium passed away in 1979, the club has provided the scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship is administered by Tri-County Community College, and the breakfast is the main funding source for the scholarship. The club requests that the scholarship goes to an Andrews student, if possible.
Pullium, a longtime member of the club, taught second grade at Andrews Elementary School for 38 years.
