Rich LeCount, commander of American Legion Post 96 in Murphy, places a wreath on the memorial for fallen soldiers at Veterans Pocket Park, where a clear and beautiful day greeted those who assembled Monday. After a talk reminding people of the price North Carolininas have paid, members of the Marine Corps, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Veterans placed wreaths at the memorial for local military members. Gold Star family members were given white carnations to remember their loved ones who died in service. Marine Corps Commandant George Bendzen closed with a quote attributed to Korean War veteran Howard Osterkamp: ”All gave some, some gave all.” See more on the Honor Guard, page 9A
