Andrews – The town will have several fun activities for kids and adults alike for Andrews Independence Day on Saturday.
Beginning the day at 11 a.m., the Honor Guard will be doing the opening ceremonies.
At 12:30 p.m., the annual peanut drop will take place at the Andrews Recreation Park, where a plane flies overhead and drops thousands of peanuts for kids to find the colored peanuts that have cash prizes.
Field events will happen after the Peanut Drop, including:
- Sack race – 1 p.m.
- 3-legged race – 1:30 p.m.
- Balloon toss – 2 p.m.
- Horseshoe tournament at the Andrews Community Center – 2 p.m.
- Egg toss – 2:30 p.m.
- Three-point shootout at the basketball court –4 p.m.
- The Andrews Pool will be open all day. Contests begin at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, including:
- Big splash contest – 2:30 p.m.
- Smallest splash contest – 3 p.m.
- Belly flop – 3:30 p.m.
- Coin dive – 4 p.m.
The American Championship Wrestling Federation will be back at 6 p.m. Saturday at Andrews Recreation Park. In the event of rain, wrestling will be moved indoors to the Andrews Community Center.
The town will provide a firework show beginning at dark, so plan to be ready for it around 9 p.m. Fireworks can be seen through town, but the recreation park is the best location to view them, Mayor James Reid said.
The 64th annual Wagon Train set out June 26 and will cover Tatham Gap, Fairview Road, Spread Eagle, Danner Cover and Whitaker Lane. On Saturday, the Wagon Train will be headed to Pisgah Loop and come back to Andrews at 3 p.m. for the parade along Main Street.
