Murphy – After a weeklong search, authorities located the body of a man who drowned while presumably trying to save his 68-year-old father.
An officer from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission located the body of 33-year-old Matt Sowell on Thursday in Hiwassee Lake. Matt and his father, Larry, drowned during a fishing trip on May 7. Officials say Matt’s body was found not far from where a kayaker located his father near the lake’s shoreline.
Authorities believe Larry fell into the water, and Matt dove in to save him. Officials located an unattended 16-foot jon boat floating in the lake across from where the kayaker found the elder man’s body. The boat contained personal items belonging to Matt.
Officials believe this was a single-boat accident. They did not find evidence of a collision and do not suspect foul play.
Cherokee County Emergency Management worked with the N.C. Wildlife
Resources Commission to locate Matt’s body. They were assisted by several law enforcement agencies and local fire
departments.
A Go Fund Me account has been set up online to help the Sowell family with expenses from this tragedy.
