Toys for Tots gears up for a huge challenge in 2020

Andrews – Cherokee County’s Toys for Tots program has consistently provided toys to 1,000 children in need each year for the last 20 years.

This year, the local organizations is needing to adjust to some new challenges. Local coordinator Don Slifer thinks the need will be greater this year due to the coronavirus’ effect on families financially.

The organization’s needs are also greater. In addition to the potentially greater need of the funds and toys to make sure every child’s eyes light up on Christmas morning, they need volunteers. Some of the organization’s regular volunteers have had to step back from their roles.

The organization has already set up a goods donation page at You Give Goods, where people can shop online through the site to donate toys to the program. There’s also a way to donate funds online at murphy-nc.toysfortots.org.

Any family in Cherokee County may benefit from Toys for Tots; there are no qualifications to demonstrate need. This year, applications are available online at murphy-nc.toysfortots.org. The application period opens Sunday and ends Monday, Nov. 30.

The organization raises funds in addition to collecting toys because it often gets requests for types of toys that aren’t donated. While they get lots of toy donations for younger children, items that appeal to preteens and teenagers aren’t often donated. The organization uses those financial donations to purchase requested toys.
