Hiwassee Dam – When first-grade students at Hiwassee Dam Elementary/Middle School learned presents were stolen at the North Pole, they used the skills they learned from their teacher, Regina Mashburn, to write news articles about the crime.
“We are incorporating more writing in the students’ daily lessons/activities,” Mashburn said. “As we are mastering writing complete sentences and beginning to write paragraphs, I thought they would enjoy having their first completed narrative writing piece being a Christmas theme.”
She said the students pretended they were news reporters and developed their own story ideas of what happened. They started by planning their stories orally, then used a graphic organizer to draft their ideas. They wrote their final pieces as a news story.
Students noted how sad Santa was about the loss of the gifts. Some determined an elf stole the gifts, while the Grinch was also named as a possible thief.
