Murphy – SilverArts was the only part of the Cherokee/Clay County Senior Games held this
year.
Judging took place on June 29 at the Murphy Art Center downtown. The exhibit was open to the public that afternoon.
Cora Edwards’ woodworking piece, Lunar Module Eagle, won Best in Show in this year’s Silver Arts competition. Usually, Best in Show is decided by the community, but under the circumstances, the competition’s five judges chose the winner.
All medalists in the local competition will go on to compete in the state competition in September. There were more than 30 registered artists, with just over 100 submissions overall in the Heritage Arts and Visual Arts categories.
Gold medal winners for Heritage Arts were:
- For Basket Weaving, Carmen Haynes’ Pine Needles Vase.
- For Crocheting, Jane Birchfield’s Granny Circle Throw.
- For Knitting, Nancy Beach’s Mosaic Scarf 1.
- For Pottery (thrown or hand-built), Mike Lalone’s Vase.
- For Quilting (hand-stitched), Mary Kelly’s Black Cherry Tree.
- For Quilting (machine-stitched), Janelle Warren’s Safari So Good.
- For Quilting (machine-stitched, collaborative), Leslie Beaster’s Christmas Remembered.
- For Stained Glass, John Allsopp’s The Cyclone.
- For Weaving, Linda Thompson’s Top Rayon.
- For Woodcarving, Terence Faries’ Full Moon.
- For Woodturning, Mary Walsh’s Walnut and Purple Heart Wood Vase.
- For Woodworking, Cora Edwards’ Lunar Module Eagle.

The Senior Games are open to people ages 50 years older. To qualify for the North Carolina competition, the individual must live in the state for three or more consecutive months.
